Preventive Dentistry

We believe, and research has shown, that oral health contributes to your complete physical and emotional well being. Our main emphasis has always been on prevention of dental disease and the maintenance of healthy teeth, gums, jaw joints and oral tissues, and so we encourage regular detailed examinations and hygiene visits.

Dental Diseases

Most dental diseases are preventable and the majority of our working day is spent on advising on ways of preventing diseases and keeping your mouth healthy.

Regular attendance is essential for you to gain maximum preventive benefit, and our dentists can offer a tailored individual maintenance programme based on the particular needs of each individual.

Examinations (check-ups)

This is one of the most important dental procedures that we undertake. Regular examinations are essential in delivering preventive advice and early diagnosis of tooth decay (dental caries), gum disease and any oral pathology before they become a problem. Our regular examinations involve not only looking at the teeth but also recording periodontal (gum) measurements and monitoring the soft tissues and the temperomandibular jaw joints. High quality radiographs (x-rays) are taken where appropriate to assist in our diagnosis and monitoring. Our intra-oral camera displays images of your teeth and gums on an overhead television monitor to further aid in diagnosis, explanation and education.

Hygienist

Our experienced hygienist works in tandem with the dentist to ensure that your gum health is monitored regularly, treated and maintained as required. The hygienist plays a vital role in educating and motivating patients to achieve a healthier mouth, and as recent research has shown, this could also play a part in your overall health, with links now established between gum disease, heart disease, diabetes, strokes and premature births.

Regular hygienist visits will also help prevent halitosis (‘bad breath’) often associated with gum disease and both the hygienist and dentist are happy to offer advice and treatment for this.

Advice and Preventive Therapy

We are able to offer advice and treatment for a range of subjects including  diet advice to prevent tooth decay and erosion as well as which toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss and interdental cleaning aids are best for you to use. These are available to purchase from the practice. We are also able to provide custom-made sportsguards (gumshields), in your team’s colours if you wish!

Our preventive therapies include

  • Fissure sealants that provide a protective resin coating on permanent teeth, fluoride treatments to provide extra protection for tooth enamel against acid attack and dietary advice for both adults and children.
  • Anti-bruxing (grinding) splints  to prevent further tooth wear and/or loss caused by many factors, the most common being subconscious stress-related night-time grinding.  Careful diagnosis of the cause of the tooth wear is important in advising you of the most appropriate type of splint to protect your teeth, oral musculature and joints from further degeneration.

A recent addition to our repertoire for those serious about their sporting activities is the custom-fitted mouthpieces manufactured by Under Armour (www.bitetech.com) that are worn by many professionals to enhance their performance.  Our practice is an authorised provider of these sports training mouthpieces.
